European supermarket chain Lidl has this month deployed its AI-powered Scan & Go system at three stores in Luxembourg.
It is testing the technology at pilot stores in Dudelange, Strassen and Windhof to offer a smoother, more autonomous and faster shopper experience.
This initiative aims to make checkout fully autonomous, while integrating technologies such as product recognition using AI.
The Scan & Go service allows shoppers to scan their items in-store using the Lidl Plus app . Customers can see the total amount of their purchases and any applicable promotions in real time. Once they have finished shopping, payment is completed in seconds at the self-checkout.
Scan & Go is completely integrated into the Lidl Plus ecosystem, making the user experience more personalised, intuitive and rewarding, all through the app.
Accompanying this launch is the introduction of smart scales equipped with AI. The scale instantly identifies the fruit or vegetable placed on the tray. It displays the corresponding item on the screen; the customer simply has to confirm. A label with a barcode is printed, allowing the item to be scanned both via Scan & Go on a smartphone and at self-checkout machines.
Each pilot store will be equipped with three scales of this type, two in the fruit and vegetable section and one in the frozen food section specifically for seafood.
To support this launch, promoters will be present in stores to guide customers, explain how Scan & Go works and ensure a smooth transition to this more autonomous mode of consumption.
“With these new technologies, we primarily want to simplify the lives of our customers,” said Walériane Dubois-Decroix, spokesperson for Lidl in Luxembourg (www.lidl.lu). “The journey becomes faster, but we maintain a human point of contact with our in-store teams who see their workspace modernised.”
Lidl plans to equip all of its Luxembourg stores with the Scan & Go system by early 2027.
