Chinese robotics company Geek+ has installed a large-scale autonomous mobile robot system in ecommerce firm Paack’s distribution centre in Madrid.

With more than 270 sorting and picking robots deployed, it is said to be the largest autonomous mobile robot (AMR) project in Europe and the company’s first to handle both last-kilometre delivery and cross-docking operations.

The distribution centre is divided into two sections: a mezzanine level for sorting and a picking section on the ground floor. Sorting robots move parcels via chutes to racks on the ground floor, where picking robots move the parcels to the operators. The system allows the distribution centre to guarantee 99.99% accuracy in order fulfilment while handling over 10,000 deliveries per hour.

“We are very proud of how the solution we developed with Paack has performed,” said Jackson Zhang, managing director of Geek+ in Europe. “This project underscores Geek+’s commitment to automating the Spanish market, one of the most important to us.”

Jean Gateau, key account director at Geek+, added: “By entrusting AI-driven logistics robots with the sorting and moving of incoming parcels around the distribution centre, we feel Paack has set a new industry standard.”

Paack’s Madrid distribution centre covers more than 27,000 square metres and handles the distribution of parcels bound for over 60 cities in Spain. The AMRs handle last-kilometre delivery for locations in and around the Spanish capital, while cross-docking prepares parcels for expedition to faraway destinations.

Having recently secured additional funding, Paack is scaling up its ecommerce operations and digitalising its entire logistics process to support companies all over Europe.

Founded in 2015, Geek+ has over 1500 employees, with offices in Germany, UK, USA, Japan, South Korea, China, Hong Kong and Singapore.

Paack delivers several million orders per month from 150 international customers, including 17 of the 20 largest ecommerce retailers in Spain, including Amazon, Apple, Inditex, AliExpress, Nike and Nespresso.

The company develops its own technology with the aim of improving the delivery experience. In addition, thanks to its technological platform, its processes and its focus on operational experience, Paack offers a flexible scheduled delivery service that adapts to the client and contributes to reducing the company’s carbon footprint.

Paack operates in Spain, UK, France, Portugal and Italy and offers coverage in more than 100 European cities

Geek+ has opened its UK regional headquarters. The office, in Sci-Tech Daresbury in Cheshire, is not only a home base for Geek+’s UK sales, engineering, and service teams, but also has a technology demonstration centre where several Geek+ AMRs are on permanent display.
