WeaveGrid, a grid-edge orchestration software provider for electric utilities, and ecobee, a maker of smart thermostats, are collaborating to bring ecobee’s smart thermostats onto WeaveGrid’s Distribution-Integrated System Capacity Orchestration (DISCO) platform. The goal is to support grid reliability and savings opportunities for customers.

Smart thermostats are among the largest categories of connected, dispatchable load already installed in homes across North America. Bringing ecobee’s thermostat fleet into DISCO expands the range of EVs, batteries, smart thermostats, and other flexible loads that utilities can manage through a single platform, WeaveGrid said.

Another goal of the partnership is to give utilities working with WeaveGrid a pathway to bring ecobee devices into load management and grid orchestration programs alongside the EVs, batteries, and other DERs DISCO already supports. For ecobee customers, it creates a new opportunity to put a device they already own to work in utility programs that reward them for supporting the grid.

The collaboration builds on WeaveGrid’s growing ecosystem of device manufacturer relationships, which now spans EVs, residential batteries, smart thermostats, and commercial loads. Recent additions to WeaveGrid’s device partner ecosystem include SolarEdge and FranklinWH, extending DISCO’s coverage into home energy systems.

As electrification and load growth continue to strain the grid, WeaveGrid and ecobee are aligned in helping utilities bring smart thermostats into grid operations to protect reliability and give customers more ways to participate and save.

WeaveGrid’s grid orchestration software is designed to enables utilities to serve growing load reliably and affordably by aligning electric demand with grid capacity from the bottom up. Through DISCO, WeaveGrid aims to provide asset-level visibility and device-level control, optimizing EVs, batteries, and other flexible loads exactly where constraints hit, from local distribution infrastructure to the bulk system.

Founded in 2007, ecobee designs and manufactures Wi-Fi-enabled smart thermostats, cameras, and sensors. To date, ecobee thermostats have delivered over 53.9 TWh of energy savings, the company said.
