Sungrow shines a light on EnergyBridge mini backup power system

Sungrow has taken the wraps off its new mini backup power system EnergyBridge. The EB80S and EB80T are designed for residential single-phase and three-phase power systems. 

The overall size is reduced by up to 99% when compared with conventional box-type backup power gateways, the company said. EnergyBridge can be directly installed into the existing distribution board without the need to drill in a wall or do complex rewiring.

EnergyBridge eliminates redundant hardware and wiring, helping reduce total system costs by around 12% while delivering what Sungrow said is a more efficient, economical, and reliable backup power solution for residential energy systems. The company said it achieves this “by highly integrating on/off-grid switching, metering, and other functions into a single compact switching device.”

In residential ESS, conventional backup systems typically rely on externally mounted gateway devices that require complex installation, Sungrow noted. EnergyBridge aims to change this approach by integrating five independent devices: a changeover switch, a circuit breaker, a meter, a bypass switch, and a CT, into a single compact unit. 

Compared with conventional solutions that require 14 poles, EnergyBridge occupies only four-to-six poles, reducing the distribution box integration space by 57%, according to Sungrow.

The company highlighted several features of the new mini backup power system:

20-second installation. Depending on an installer’s expertise, positioning, leveling with a spirit level, drilling, wiring, and other steps, the traditional installation procedure can take up to one hour to complete. In contrast, EnergyBridge is mounted directly onto the standard DIN rail using a snap-in design, and the entire installation process takes only 20 seconds.

No drilling and no wall damage. Because EnergyBridge can be directly embedded into distribution boxes, there is no need for destructive wall modification works, such as drilling and penetrating walls required for traditional gateway installation. Additionally, EnergyBridge can be easily removed when needed, leaving the installation area clean and unobtrusive so the system can receive future system upgrades.

Worry-free complex scenarios with simplified wiring. There are often installation challenges with conventional box-type gateways in homes where the distribution box is far from the gateway location or separated by walls. Consequently, additional drilling, exposed cable routing, or concealed wiring work is necessary. Many of these wiring materials, accessories, and labor-intensive installation steps are removed with EnergyBridge, so the bill of materials from the source is simplified, leading to improved installation efficiency.

Protection for reliable home backup. EnergyBridge can withstand extreme surge events In on/off-grid switching scenarios by delivering more than 6,000 high-current switching cycles. It also offers a maximum breaking capacity of 6 kA. This improves its safety and reliability.

Further, traditional backup power systems rely on the coordinated operation of five independent devices, where the failure of any single device will cause system malfunction. In contrast, EnergyBridge’s highly integrated architecture is designed to reduce the probability of failure.

Backup within 10 ms. When grid fluctuations or power outages occur, EnergyBridge is designed to enable seamless switching from the grid power supply to the backup power supply within 10 ms, ensuring homeowners receive an uninterrupted power supply. Meanwhile, with a rated current of up to 80 A, the system supports whole-home high-power loads up to 18.4 kW for single-phase systems and 55.2 kW for three-phase systems.
