Sense manages EV charging for utilities

Massachusetts-based Sense is using load management to unlock smarter forecasting, better distribution planning and more efficient managed EV charging for utilities.
Called EV Analytics, the load management system is delivered through AMI 2.0 meters and offers electric vehicle detection and charging insights. By processing waveform data at the grid edge, EV Analytics detects the presence of EVs and estimates both levels one and two charge events, including start-stop times and kilowatt-hour consumption.
The product is the first grid-edge product from Sense built specifically for utilities’ grid visibility and reliability needs.
“You can’t measure what you can’t see, which is where our new EV Analytics comes in,” said Nancy Riley, senior vice president at Sense. “We’ve focused our energy on finding all EVs on a grid, including those ghost EVs that utilities are often blind to because they use level-one chargers. This is just the start of the software innovation you can expect from Sense moving forward; innovation that’s focused on delivering tools to utilities that accelerate electrification, grid reliability and grid capacity from the edge.”
EV Analytics allows utilities to:
- Harness the power of edge computing: Analyse high-resolution waveform data locally on the meter using embedded AI and machine learning, delivering accurate detection and measurement that outperform traditional 15-minute interval cloud models
- Support all vehicles and chargers: Identify and quantify EV charge events regardless of brand or charger type, removing the need for costly telematics or integrations
- Improve programme efficiency: Reduce costs and increase enrolment in managed charging programmes with reliable, grid-edge detection and measurement of EV charging
- Build reliable, scalable options: Leverage flexible communication protocols – including cellular, mesh and wifi – for seamless integration across utility systems
EV Analytics (sense.com/resources/ev-charging-is-changing-the-grid-heres-how-to-get-ahead) is the first in a suite of capabilities Sense plans to deliver over the coming months designed to transform grid-edge data into real-time action. Embedded directly in AMI 2.0 smart meters, Sense enables utilities to detect charging behaviour across all vehicles and chargers without relying on proprietary telematics or cloud-based integrations that often create barriers to participation.
By eliminating these barriers, Sense (sense.com) opens the door for all consumers within a utility’s service area to participate in utility programmes that will motivate them to manage their EV charging costs and support grid reliability.
EV Analytics is available to utilities leveraging Landis+Gyr (www.landisgyr.com) Revelo meters through the Sense EV Analytics app.
