Ontario utility Alectra is deploying Itron’s distributed intelligence technology to modernise its grid.
Alectra Utilities will deploy an industrial IoT network to modernise and improve the electric distribution grid’s performance and enable value-added services for its more than one million customers.
As part of the project, Alectra is deploying Itron’s Gen5 Riva meters, multi-purpose industrial IoT (IIoT) network and Utility IQ utility management software suite, designed to help collect and manage electricity consumption data and enable real-time decision making.
Itron’s meter technology has distributed intelligence and grid edge capabilities. Distributed intelligence provides utilities with the ability to transform their business operations through edge computing capabilities that allow for visibility and control in low- and medium-voltage distribution networks.
Increasing the benefits of advanced metering infrastructure, utilities can also take advantage of applications such as enhanced outage detection and electric vehicle management.
“The decision to renew our end-of-life metering infrastructure comes at an important time when advancements in technology are paving the way for a modernised grid,” said Shelley Parker, vice president of metering at Alectra. “Together with Itron, we are preparing to meet the demands of increased electrification, empowering customers to manage their energy requirements and costs, and advancing energy sustainability.”
John Marcolini, senior vice president at Itron, added: “Itron gives Alectra the foundation to bring energy innovation to life and enable grid modernisation and sustainability. Itron’s robust IIoT network combined with its distributed intelligence capabilities enable a new approach to consumer engagement, grid operations and smart city applications, from every single meter.”
Alectra plans to replace its metering infrastructure gradually over the next decade, ensuring a seamless transition to the new technology.
Itron (www.itron.com) enables utilities and cities to deliver critical infrastructure to communities in more than 100 countries. Its smart networks, software, services, meters and sensors help manage electricity, gas and water resources.
Serving more than one million homes and businesses in Ontario’s Greater Golden Horseshoe area, Alectra Utilities (www.alectra.com) is the largest municipally-owned electric utility in Canada, based on the total number of customers served.
