Illinois-based power grid technology company G&W Electric has acquired Safegrid, a provider of intelligent grid monitoring in Finland.
The acquisition expands G&W Electric’s digital and analytics capabilities and supports its long-term strategy to help utilities improve visibility, reliability and performance across medium and high voltage distribution and transmission networks.
G&W Electric has been a shareholder and partner with Safegrid, piloting the technology with utility customers prior to the acquisition. The transaction formalises and accelerates a collaboration that has already demonstrated strong alignment between Safegrid’s software capabilities and G&W Electric’s equipment portfolio.
Safegrid developed the Intelligent Grid System, a grid monitoring combination of instant-on wireless sensors with analytics to deliver real-time insight into grid conditions. Designed for rapid deployment, it enables utilities to identify emerging issues, anticipate failures and reduce outage duration for enhanced asset health management. The technology has been widely adopted by utilities in Finland and surrounding regions and is gaining momentum in the USA, Europe and Apac.
The acquisition comes at a time of accelerating demand for grid intelligence, driven by electrification, the rapid expansion of data centre infrastructure and the growing complexity of power distribution networks. By bringing together proven hardware with intelligent monitoring and predictive analytics, G&W Electric is building the foundation for grid technology that combine physical infrastructure with digital insight.
“As power distribution systems are becoming more complex and more critical, utilities need deeper, faster insight into what is happening in their networks,” said John Mueller, chairman of G&W Electric. “We have seen through our partnership with Safegrid how their technology complements what we do. By bringing Safegrid into G&W Electric, we are accelerating our strategy to integrate intelligent monitoring and predictive analytics into our power distribution portfolio, giving customers the tools they need to operate their grids more confidently, efficiently and resiliently.”
G&W Electric’s expertise in power grid automation and Safegrid’s sensing and analytics technology should deliver a more comprehensive approach to grid intelligence. Utilities will have enhanced visibility into system-level challenges, enabling more accurate monitoring of the age, condition and health of installed electrical equipment. This integrated approach supports improved fault prediction, faster restoration times and stronger grid resilience.
“G&W Electric shares our vision for smarter, more resilient grids supported by asset health intelligence,” said Paula Laine, CEO of Safegrid. “Their industry experience, customer relationships, engineering depth and presence in over 100 countries create new opportunities to bring our technology to utilities worldwide. We are excited to work as one team to address the evolving challenges facing power distribution networks.”
Safegrid (www.safegrid.io) will continue to operate from its headquarters in Espoo, Finland, with the people, technology and culture that have driven its success remaining central to the combined organisation. G&W Electric (www.gwelectric.com) is investing in the continued development of Safegrid’s technology and its expansion into new markets as both teams work together to scale intelligent grid technology globally.
Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.
