China Southern Power Grid unveils AI to plan grids in 10 minutes

State-owned utility giant China Southern Power Grid (CSG) took the wraps off a suite of AI technologies at the recent 2026 World AI Conference (WAIC) in Shanghai that spanned from foundation models to IoT operating systems.

The demonstration was headlined by an AI agent dubbed “MegaWatt Yunrui,” which CSG said is capable of drafting a full distribution network plan — including risk assessments and topology recommendations — in just 10 minutes. The system was named one of the conference’s Top 10 Signature Exhibits, making it the only project from a central state-owned entity to earn that distinction.

CSG’s showcase reflects a broader strategic push by the Chinese government to integrate three domains that have historically operated in silos: electricity, carbon management, and high-performance computing. The company said it has built what it calls China’s first industry-level electricity-carbon-computing coordination platform, an architecture that covers computing infrastructure, power-sector foundation models, AI agents, and field devices.

“We have integrated three systems that traditionally operated independently — electricity, carbon and computing — to establish China’s first industry-level electricity-carbon-computing coordination platform,” CSG said in materials distributed at the event.

This year marks the first time that coordination between computing infrastructure and power systems was explicitly written into China’s Government Work Report, which also included unprecedented “synergy between computing infrastructure and power systems” as a policy directive. This move indicates that Beijing views the intersection of energy and digital infrastructure as a national priority, officials said.

The company declared its ambition to become a global leader in the convergence of power, carbon, and computing, and has already begun building a fully autonomous and controllable end-to-end technology stack covering energy industry foundation models, intelligent robotics, and digital infrastructure.

CSG stated it has integrated the traditionally siloed power, carbon, and computing systems into China’s first industrial-grade “Power-Carbon-Computing Synergy Platform.” Built on a digitalized grid foundation, this architecture extends upward through computing infrastructure, industry foundation models, and AI agents to field devices, forming a complete ecosystem. The goal is to support the digital transformation of next-generation power grids through full-stack intelligent execution and collaborative capabilities.

The platform’s core is “MegaWatt Multimodal 2.0,” a foundation model purpose-built for the power industry. MegaWatt Yunrui is at the application layer and functions as an AI-native distribution network planning agent, designed to directly address national energy security and new power system construction demands. CSG described the system as “a domestic first and internationally advanced.” During the live demonstration at the conference, the system took just 10 minutes from receiving a task to outputting a complete planning report, showcasing AI’s deployment potential in traditional power infrastructure.

Beyond AI planning tools, CSG also presented features at the digital infrastructure layer, notably, its self-developed unified operating system, “PowerAtomOS.” Designed specifically for IoT devices in the energy sector, the system aims to provide centralized connectivity and management for hundreds of millions of networked devices, supporting critical power equipment across nearly all operational scenarios within CSG’s service territory.

CSG’s presence at the conference ties in with China’s government work report, which incorporated computing infrastructure and power system synergy into the national policy framework this year for the first time. The report provides high-level design for the digital and intelligent transformation of the energy sector. As one of China’s two major power grid operators, CSG serves five provinces and regions—Guangdong, Guangxi, Yunnan, Guizhou, and Hainan—which officials said makes its technology roadmap and investment direction a bellwether for the AI-driven evolution of China’s power industry.
