French city services firm Veolia won more than £1 billion in new and extended local authority contracts in the United Kingdom during 2025. The contracts cover waste management, street cleansing, and resource recovery services for over 50 municipal partners. These new contracts include a number of smart city projects for UK municipalities.
The company’s UK new smart city and sustainability contracts include: £70 million investment in a “tray to tray” closed-loop PET recycling facility; a vehicle-to-grid (V2G) project in the City of Westminster using electric waste trucks to power homes; and electrification of municipal fleets to support local decarbonisation targets. The company has generated £25 million in social value through local employment and education.
Veolia’s UK municipal division grew by 35% between 2020 and 2025. Recent wins include a long-term integrated waste management contract with the London Borough of Bromley and service extensions for the South London Waste Partnership, covering 1.2 million residents.
Estelle Brachlianoff, CEO of Veolia, said the growth is part of the “Green Up” strategic programme, which focuses on decarbonisation and resource regeneration at the local level. The company has invested £1 billion in UK recycling and waste infrastructure over the past decade.
Veolia currently employs 15,500 people in the UK. The group stated that its ongoing investments are designed to help local authorities adapt to legislative changes regarding waste processing and strategic autonomy.
