The UK Government has launched a “Co-Creation” challenge inviting experts to develop a visualisation tool capable of providing immersive digital representations of global cities. The project aims to help central and local authorities better understand the complex data and connectivity networks that underpin smart city infrastructure.

Managed by the HMGCC, the Government’s Communications Centre, the challenge focuses on the risks associated with the diverse supply chains of vendors that provide smart city sensors and digital connectivity. By creating a digital twin or visualisation of these environments, the government seeks to identify and mitigate potential privacy and information security vulnerabilities.

The programme is open to specialists in data visualisation, digital twin technology, urban systems, and cybersecurity. Successful applicants will receive funding to develop solutions that can map and analyse the technical architecture of urban environments.

“Smart cities use technology, data, and digital connectivity to improve infrastructure and create safe environments,” HMGCC said in the challenge brief. “Better understanding the way they work can help identify and mitigate potential risks around privacy and information security.” Applications for the funded challenge remain open until 12 August.

HMGCC builds technology to support UK national security and defend the country’s critical national infrastructure. Based in the Bletchley area, HMGCC has close links to the FCDO and the British intelligence community.
