New York is upgrading connectivity on the NYC metro system running under the East River between Manhattan and Brooklyn Heights. The Joralemon Street tunnel, which carries Lines 4 and 5 trains under the river, has received cellular connectivity from AT&T working with Boldyn Networks. Line G, which provides connecting services with Lines 4 and 5, is scheduled for the next cellular service upgrades.
The Joralemon Street tunnel is the oldest underwater subway tunnel in New York City. Its 1.1-mile stretch connects the 4 and 5 lines between Manhattan and Brooklyn. The crosstown G line, which is scheduled to receive the next cellular service upgrades, connects Brooklyn and Queens and provides connection with Manhattan bound trains.
AT&T will be the first carrier providing wireless connectivity to its users in these tunnels.
“We’re committed to using technology to improve the customer experience, and our customers deserve connectivity in the system. We’re proud to expand service with this partnership at no cost to our riders,” said Jamie Torres-Springer, President, New York Metropolitan Transit Authority Construction & Development. “We’re thrilled with AT&T’s engagement, and we expect other carriers will see the benefits of this partnership and help us push this movement forward.”
“Reliable connectivity is foundational to New York City’s infrastructure and quality of life,” said John Emra, President, Atlantic Region, AT&T. “This investment reflects our long-standing commitment to the city, bringing secure, dependable mobile service to the heart of the subway system and supporting the infrastructure that keeps New Yorkers connected, productive, and moving.”
