The Canadian city of Montréal has begun deployment of AI-powered traffic monitoring technology at 100 intersections to track road safety and manage traffic flow.

The initiative is part of the city’s Safety and Mobility Analysis System at Intersections (SASMI), a programme designed to identify accident risks and monitor multimodal transport networks.

The city is using the INSIGHT platform developed by Derq, a company specialising in intelligent transportation. The system uses AI to analyse real-time data, allowing municipal transportation teams to monitor roadway activity and detect emerging safety hazards. The project is being delivered in partnership with Tacel Ltd, a Canadian distributor of transport solutions.

According to the city, the 100-intersection rollout is one of the largest of its kind in North America. The platform provides real-time visibility into roadway activity, helping officials identify risk patterns and respond to traffic issues. The city intends to evaluate the platform for potential expansion across its broader network over time.

The technology is intended to move the city away from a reliance on historical accident reports and fragmented data. By providing granular traffic intelligence, the system allows the municipal government to target interventions at specific locations where data suggests a high probability of future incidents.

“The deployment of artificial intelligence solutions marks a strategic shift toward more proactive mobility management, enabling us to anticipate risks and respond more quickly,” said Alan DeSousa, Borough Mayor responsible for mobility and infrastructure.
