Redmond-based MicroVision, Inc. and Dutch firm Avular Innovations have signed an MoU to integrate lidar sensors into modular drone platforms for civilian infrastructure applications. The agreement aims to develop autonomous systems capable of operating in complex urban environments.
The collaboration will focus on several smart city functions, including high-resolution 3D terrain mapping, traffic management, and emergency service support. By using MicroVision’s solid-state lidar technology, the drones will be able to execute missions in areas without GPS reception and perform autonomous take-offs and landings in unknown locations.
A joint demonstration programme will be launched to validate the performance of the integrated lidar and perception software under realistic operating conditions. MicroVision will lead business development in the United States, while Netherlands-based Avular will oversee initiatives in the European market.
The drones are designed to address operational challenges such as labour shortages and security risks in the maintenance of public infrastructure. The integrated system is intended to provide a scalable solution for municipal authorities and commercial operators requiring precise situational awareness.
“By combining our perception technology with Avular’s advanced drone platforms, we enable stakeholders to gain a new level of situational awareness, autonomy and operational performance,” said Glen DeVos, CEO of MicroVision.
