Itron and Current are working to reduce over-illumination and light pollution from modern city LED street lighting.
The two companies are collaborating on a combined smart lighting package, drawing on Itron’s CityEdge portfolio and Current’s Evolve Roadway LED fixtures and luminaries.
The new offering, combining Itron’s intelligent controls with high-efficiency LED products from Current, aims to avoid the over-illumination and light pollution that modern LED-based street light can produce. Itron intelligent controls will enable cities to adjust dynamically street lighting levels. This will allow appropriate illumination while maintaining energy savings. It will also streamline inventory by reducing the need for multiple fixture types.
Beyond dimming and energy cost reduction, CityEdge offers remote asset monitoring and streetlight fault detection. It also supports integration with additional sensors, such as air quality, traffic and weather. This allows cities to take advantage of multiple smart city applications to improve community safety. Paired with Current’s luminaires, CityEdge helps streamline operations through features like automated asset management data collection with Digital Addressable Lighting Interface (DALI) drivers.
Current’s Evolve Roadway products are optimised for outdoor environments and designed for streetlights. These provide glare control and optical precision for uniform light distribution and improved visibility.
“Current is a trusted leader in LED lighting, and integrating their fixtures with Itron’s smart city platform creates a resilient, end-to-end solution for cities and utilities. Our CityEdge portfolio is equipped with a range of solutions and ultimately brings together IoT technologies, real-time data and advanced insights to help utilities and cities achieve their goals. With Current’s LED streetlight fixtures, we are offering a resilient and scalable solution that connects everything from the back office to the street,” said John Marcolini, senior vice president of Networked Solutions at Itron.
“Our legacy in lighting innovation spans nearly 100+ years, and we’re committed to creating solutions that evolve with our customers’ needs,” said Chip Taylor, Chief Commercial Officer at Current. “Partnering with Itron is a meaningful step toward building smarter, more connected cities for utilities and local governments. Together, we’re delivering an integrated solution that not only lights up streets but also empowers utility teams and city staff with full control over their lighting systems.”
