Californian mobility infrastructure firm Iteris has unveiled an artificial-intelligence powered detection sensor for smart intersections.

Called Vantage Apex, it is said to be the industry’s first 1080p HD video and 4D and HD radar sensor with integrated AI algorithms.

The AI-powered smart sensor can accurately detect, track and classify vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists, as well as producing an HD video display for traffic management centre monitoring.

The system can provide critical infrastructure data for connected and automated vehicles through vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communications.

Built on an AI machine-learning platform, Vantage Apex identifies objects using the firm’s AI video analytics, image library, GPU and CPU-based computing, machine learning and neural network algorithms. This enables the precision and detailed classification of many different vehicle types and vulnerable road users, such as pedestrians and cyclists.

Full HD video streaming using 1080p cameras results in crisp vision with depth and clarity of traffic at intersections, which can be viewed at traffic management centres or remotely on mobile devices via the Iteris Video Viewer app.

Using forward-fire radar technology to eliminate occlusion virtually, the hybrid sensor uses 4D and HD radar technology with a field of view exceeding 180m. The system enables decision-zone safety functions, collision avoidance and lane-by-lane detection that delivers precise traffic detection and data.

It is connected vehicle ready, with the ability to provide critical infrastructure data through V2X communications to connected and automated vehicles, including through Iteris’ BlueToad Spectra connected vehicle.

Vantage Apex is compatible with VantageCare, the company’s cloud-enabled detection health monitoring managed service, as well as its ClearGuide SPM and VantageLive, and other third-party web and mobile-based traffic measurement applications.
