The Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute (ASTRI) and Citybus have launched a Cellular Vehicle-to-Everything (C-V2X) pilot scheme in the city’s Kai Tak Development Area. The trial marks the first integration of C-V2X technology into a franchised bus network in the city.

The system uses the 5.9GHz dedicated spectrum band to allow double-deck buses to communicate with smart roadside units (RSUs) on Shing Fung Road and Muk On Street. Bus captains receive real-time driving recommendations and safety alerts via an onboard tablet, including information on traffic signal status and roadworks.

Four buses operating on routes 22, 22D, 22M, and 22X have been equipped with the technology. The system integrates data from the government’s “DATA.GOV.HK” portal to provide alerts about road conditions beyond the driver’s line of sight, such as traffic incidents or unexpected obstacles.

Ir Dr Ted Suen, Chief Executive Officer of ASTRI, said: “This not only demonstrates how smart mobility can tangibly enhance road safety but also represents a significant step in Hong Kong’s journey towards becoming a smart city.”

The pilot scheme is intended to provide a foundation for future autonomous bus projects. ASTRI and Citybus will collect operational data and feedback from drivers to optimise the system’s performance in a high-density urban environment.
