Hitachi Rail has finalised its acquisition of Clever Devices, a US-based provider of technology for the transit industry. The move is intended to expand Hitachi’s portfolio of digital and multi-modal transport systems for urban environments.

Clever Devices specialises in technologies that manage various aspects of public transport, including real-time passenger information, fleet management, and vehicle health monitoring. The integration of these services is expected to enhance Hitachi’s existing capabilities in digital signalling, payment systems, and smart operations.

The acquisition aligns with Hitachi’s broader strategy to lead in the digital transformation of social infrastructure. The company reported revenues of 10,586.7 billion yen for the fiscal year ended March 2026 and employs approximately 290,000 people worldwide across sectors including energy, mobility, and digital systems.

Hitachi Rail, which operates in more than 50 countries, intends to use the acquisition to accelerate the development of sustainable mobility solutions. The company currently manages urban ecosystems and freight railways, ranging from rolling stock production to AI-driven operational tools.
