FocalPoint, STMicro improve urban GNSS by 32%

FocalPoint and STMicroelectronics have released results from a benchmarking study in central London showing a 32% reduction in satellite positioning errors in dense urban environments. The study tested FocalPoint’s S-GNSS Auto software integrated with STMicroelectronics’ Teseo platform against standard receivers in “urban canyons” where tall buildings typically obstruct signals.

The testing utilised recorded GNSS radio frequency data and a survey-grade inertial measurement unit to establish a ground-truth position. In the most difficult conditions, represented by the 95th percentile, the combined solution recorded a horizontal positioning error of 7.0 metres. This compared to errors of between 10.3 and 21.2 metres for the other commercially available receivers and modem-based solutions tested.

The software-based approach is designed to improve the reliability of location data for smart city applications without requiring additional hardware. Map-based analysis showed the system maintained tighter alignment with actual routes during turns and in narrow streets, such as those near the Fenchurch Street area.

“This data shows that in the most challenging urban conditions, where GNSS performance typically breaks down, our combined solution can help significantly reduce the largest positioning errors,” said Jez Ellis-Gray, lead product manager at FocalPoint Positioning.

The technology is aimed at improving navigation for autonomous systems and mobile devices operating in complex metropolitan areas where multipath reflections often degrade accuracy.
