Delaware converts to all-electronic tolling

In a move to modernise regional public transport, Delaware has converted the New Hope-Lambertville Toll Bridge over the Delaware River to an open-road all-electronic tolling system (AET) from TransCore. The conversion is the first such conversion for the Delaware River Joint Toll Bridge Commission (DRJTBC).

The system replaces traditional toll plaza infrastructure, allowing motorists to cross the bridge between Pennsylvania and New Jersey without stopping. The deployment includes the Infinity Digital Lane System and an AI-powered vehicle classification solution known as VCATS. The bridge currently handles more than 10,000 vehicles daily and has the highest transponder usage rate in the DRJTBC system at nearly 94 per cent.

The conversion is part of a broader modernisation programme for the commission’s seven legacy toll bridges. By removing physical toll booths, the agency aims to improve roadway safety and reduce long-term maintenance costs. The New Hope-Lambertville site will serve as a framework for the future migration of the remaining six facilities in the network.

TransCore, a subsidiary of ST Engineering, provides the technical infrastructure for the commission’s transition to cashless operations. The project follows the commission’s initial move toward cashless tolling in 2025.
