Adelanto bridges digital divide with wireless fibre

California city Adelanto has completed the first phase of a high-speed wireless fibre network designed to provide internet access to underserved urban areas. The network will increase digital inclusion across low income, elderly and underserved populations within the city. It is projected to support the roll-out of telehealth services in subsequent phases as well as bridging the city’s current digital divide.

The project, delivered by Newport Beach-based Peltbeam, uses proprietary WiFi repeater technology to provide outdoor wireless coverage without the need for traditional fibre trenching or permitting. The initial rollout covers Adelanto City Hall, the Public Works building, a community centre, a senior centre, and several residential neighbourhoods.

A key component of the infrastructure is the use of solar-powered repeater nodes. One such node at the local skate park integrates a street light, a 24-hour security camera, and a wireless internet access point. This off-grid capability allows the city to extend connectivity to areas with limited power infrastructure.

The project was funded without using the City’s General Fund, aligning with state and federal digital equity initiatives such as the Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment (BEAD) programme. The next phase of the project will be discussed by the City Council on May 13.
