Netmore Group has partnered with utility provider Aarhus Vand and technology firm Kamstrup to deploy a Massive IoT smart meter network across Aarhus, Denmark’s second-largest city.

The project will see the installation of approximately 69,000 digitally connected water meters throughout the municipality. To support the digital water metering technology, Netmore will deploy and manage a dense LoRaWAN (Long Range Wide Area Network) infrastructure, enabling continuous, remote data transmission between the meters and the utility’s central systems.

With a municipal population of nearly 380,000, Aarhus serves as a major economic and educational hub on the Jutland peninsula. The city’s transition to a fully digitalised water infrastructure is designed to eliminate manual meter readings and provide real-time visibility into consumption patterns across its expanding urban footprint.

The continuous data collection will allow Aarhus Vand to detect anomalies such as water leaks, faulty heat exchangers, or damaged infrastructure before they cause significant resource waste. Residents will also gain online access to their usage data to monitor and reduce their water consumption.

“Delivering reliable meter reading demands a network that meets high-performance requirements consistently, not just in ideal conditions, but across every meter, every day,” said Helle Pernille Hansen, Specialist Manager at Aarhus Vand. “Our pilot demonstrated that LoRaWAN meets those standards in practice, and our partnership with Netmore and Kamstrup gives us the confidence to scale.”

The rollout will begin in the Tranbjerg district following a successful 1,000-household pilot, with full deployment across the municipality scheduled for completion by 2030.
