ABB and Samsung opened a smart home showcase in Sweden last week to demonstrate energy efficiency.
The model home has a smart-home energy management system (SHEMS) supported by SmartThings Energy. It is in Brobyholm, a smart and energy efficient residential community development near Stockholm, Sweden.
Also involved in the project are solar technology company SMA and real-estate firm S Property. Samsung will supply its appliances to Brobyholm residents and provide SmartThings Energy for users to control their energy use in a consolidated way.
“We are excited to present this smart community to the public,” said Chan Woo Park, executive vice president at Samsung Electronics. “Our goal is to create seamless connectivity that helps consumers easily manage their homes and save energy at the same time.”
Samsung will supply its appliances – including refrigerators, ovens, dishwashers, washers and dryers – that will all sync to SmartThings Energy to control, monitor and save energy. Photovoltaics (PV) energy production and an energy storage system (ESS) under development by S Property will aim to increase energy efficiency in each home.
Furthermore, building on its partnership with ABB in 2022, Samsung will integrate SmartThings Energy with ABB-free@home automation. As a result, homes in Brobyholm will be capable of connecting appliances and devices to a centralised system that automatically saves energy, time and cost. And with a few clicks on the SmartThings mobile app, homeowners will have access and control over the energy consumption within their homes.
The smart home opened as a model home for visitors and future residents of Brobyholm last week. Upon completion of the first 500 homes in 2025, more smart and energy efficient homes are expected to fill up the development. S Property plans to build up to 2000 homes at Brobyholm by 2028.
Samsung (www.samsung.com) has worked to develop net-zero environments and the effort was recently showcased as an interactive experience at IFA in Berlin. Moving forward, Samsung plans to create additional turnkey smart home products with the goal of applying and expanding them in countries around the world.
To improve the liveability and energy efficiency of large residential, commercial and multi-dwelling residential buildings, ABB Smart Buildings and Samsung C&T have entered a global agreement to deliver integrated holistic building automation, energy distribution and energy management technology.
“This exciting new agreement with Samsung C&T is another important step forward in expanding our portfolio of seamless and comprehensive smart building technology and services and reflects our ongoing commitment to collaborating with partners to address global energy efficiency challenges,” said Lucy Han, head of building and home automation at ABB (global.abb). “Our commitment to open technologies and industry interoperability standards is ongoing and today’s announcement extends our portfolio for commercial and large residential developments to the property management level.”
Hyejung Helen Cho from Samsung C&T (samsungcnt.com) added: “Construction companies, property developers and operators will also benefit from the convenience of a combined, one-stop-shop offering of Samsung C&T’s devices and ABB’s smart home control devices. The scope of the Samsung C&T platform demonstrates ongoing opportunities for developers to further upgrade the level of technology over time.”
