French space-based connectivity firm Univity is working with Indonesia’s national satellite operator Telkomsat on the use of satellite-based connectivity in Indonesia.

The two companies have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to assess potential use cases for satellite connectivity, including very low Earth orbit (VLEO) architecture, and future direct-to-device services.

Collaboration activities will centre on leveraging the complementary strengths of the two companies’ space-based networks to address evolving telecommunication connectivity needs in Indonesia, and will focus on a range of possible applications, including enterprise connectivity, mobility and connectivity for unserved and underserved areas.

The MoU also reflects a shared interest in sovereign satellite connectivity capabilities for Indonesia through nationally hosted ground infrastructure interfacing with future VLEO constellations.

Telkomsat and Univity will further evaluate hybrid multi-orbit architectures combining the resilience of Telkomsat’s geostationary satellites network with Univity’s design-to-cost VLEO systems to deliver secure, resilient and tailored offerings addressing public sector priorities and national security applications.

Univity is developing a shared and neutral space infrastructure designed to place telecom operators at the centre of the value chain. Through a VLEO constellation leveraging telecom operators’ 5G spectrum, the company is working towards high-speed, low-latency connectivity designed to complement terrestrial networks.
