Telit hopes to capitalise on Chinese fears

Telit believes its acquisition last year of Thales’ cellular IoT products makes it the ideal choice for those nervous about buying products from China.
Now marketed under the name Telit Cinterion, a brand unveiled earlier this year at Mobile World Congress, the company’s end-to-end IoT offering serves large enterprises, OEMs, system integrators and service providers.
“Changing the logo is mirroring all the changes that are happening,” said Thierry Uguen, head of connectivity at Telit Cinterion, speaking at last week’s Embedded World show in Nuremberg.
He said a lot of customers who had been using other modules, notably from China, were now looking for something in the European or North American field and the Telit Cinterion portfolio was an option.
“If you are concerned about the geopolitical circumstances and want to engage with a company that isn’t in China, Telit Cinterion becomes an obvious choice,” he said. “A lot who had gone looking for cheaper options are coming back to us.”
Some companies, he said, now saw it as a risk to be totally based on Chinese technology.
“It is a big trend,” he said. “People see the news and they know there are real issues.”
He said there were a lot of synergies between the portfolios of the two companies, which were being merged. There were some duplications, but the separate lines would continue until the next generation of products when they will come together.
“The first commitment to our customers is business continuity so we can support their existing products,” said Uguen, “but in the future with new designs we will rationalise things. We are not just selling connectivity, we are managing connections. IoT is all about partners, so we want to work with companies for a long period of time. It is a journey. It is not a one-day integration. We are a partner.”
