Taiwanese embedded computing firm Advantech’s Uno IoT edge gateways are now available in the Microsoft Azure certified device catalogue and have qualified for Amazon Web Services (AWS) IoT Greengrass.

This helps users get IoT products and services up and running quickly with hardware and software that has been pre-tested and verified to work with Azure IoT services. The Azure certified device programme allows businesses to reach customers where they are, working with an ecosystem of devices and platforms, allowing for faster time to production.

Advantech’s Uno edge gateways have achieved Microsoft’s Azure certified device and edge managed certifications, providing devices capable of streamlining deployment, reducing costs and facilitating edge computing and analytics. To support various industrial IoT and automation applications, Uno gateways have a rugged, application-oriented design.

The Azure certified device programme validates that Uno IoT edge gateways support connection to the Azure IoT Hub and secure provisioning via the DPS device provisioning service, guaranteeing their functionality and interoperability. The gateways have also achieved edge managed certification, which specifies device management standards for Azure connected devices. Securing this certification demonstrates the performance of Uno gateways in regards to edge runtime compatibility for module deployment and management.

AWS IoT Greengrass is an open-source edge runtime and cloud service that facilitates the development, deployment and management of device software.

The qualification means the Uno-137, 148, 2271G v2, 2372G, 410 and 430 gateways are compatible with most mainstream cloud services and pre-built software components, providing platforms for cost-efficient local software development.

Integrated with AWS IoT Greengrass, the gateways seamlessly extend AWS functionality and cloud intelligence to the edge. For example, with IoT Greengrass, AWS Lambda functions and prebuilt software modules can be used to build edge applications for stream analytics, machine learning, image recognition and other high-value AI applications that are deployed from the cloud to the edge for local execution.

Similarly, Amazon SageMaker Neo DLR and TensorFlow Lite frameworks allow machine-learning inference to be conducted at the edge on using cloud-trained models. This enables local devices to act on locally generated data, while storing, analysing, visualising and decision-making tasks are conducted through the cloud, streamlining data processing operations and facilitating the convergence of OT and IT.

To support IoT and automation applications, Uno edge gateways are equipped with multiple IOs for integrating secondary expansion stacks and wifi, LTE and 5G connectivity modules that extend the system functions.

The gateways also feature edge container technology that supports third-party container-native applications and allows cloud services to be deployed as decentralised computing resources.

By leveraging the AWS Partner Network (APN), a global community of partners that use programmes, expertise and resources to build, market and sell customer offerings, Uno gateways with IoT Greengrass can help OEMs and their customers simplify, accelerate and optimise IoT device development.

The edge gateways are rugged, fanless systems designed for easy deployment and maintenance in industrial, outdoor, roadside, in-cabinet, hazardous and flammable environments. These gateways are also installed with Advantech’s Wise-DeviceOn IoT management software, which supports data collection and visualisation, failure prediction and prevention, logic control, and remote management tasks.

Accordingly, with IoT Greengrass compatibility, the gateways provide applicable edge platforms that facilitate cost-effective local development of edge-to-cloud IoT.
