The 450 largest cellular IoT deployments together account for 349 million units, according to market watcher Berg Insight.

The company has presented its annual database covering the 450 largest cellular IoT deployments identified as part of the company’s IoT market research activities since 2004.

The list includes various types of projects and product categories deployed across all IoT verticals including OEM automotive, aftermarket automotive, transport and logistics, utilities, infrastructure, buildings and security, retail, industrial, consumer electronics, healthcare, and other. The database includes project size and geographical distribution by the end of 2019 as well as a five-year forecast for each individual project.

“The projects included in the top-450 list together account for approximately 349 million active cellular IoT subscriptions,” said Rickard Andersson, principal analyst at Berg Insight.

He said this corresponded to as much as 22.3 per cent of the total number of cellular IoT connections worldwide at the end of 2019. The 450 projects on the list are in the coming years forecasted to grow to 752 million units by 2024, corresponding to an overall compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 16.6 per cent.

“More than 70 deployments on the list have surpassed one million subscriptions and the top-ten projects alone account for over 118 million units,” said Andersson.

Transport and logistics form the largest vertical in terms of the number of projects that made the top list, followed by retail, aftermarket automotive, utilities, buildings and security, OEM automotive, healthcare, and industrial.

When comparing the number of active subscriptions represented by each vertical for the entries in the top-450 list, OEM automotive is instead the largest vertical, accounting for 96 million units, ahead of transport and logistics at 76 million units and utilities representing 68 million units.

The North American and European markets represent 95.4 million units and 85.5 million units, respectively, of the active M2M and IoT units across all verticals on the top list. The rest of world market accounts for 145.0 million units.
