German firm Yunex Traffic is improving traffic management in the UK following contracts with two local councils.

The city of Coventry has chosen its AI-enabled traffic detection to improve road safety at a complex intersection. And Bath & North East Somerset Council has chosen its Stratos UTMC urban traffic management and control technology to replace its existing installation with a more efficient, resilient and future-ready approach to network management.

The Coventry deployment uses video analytics and AI-trained machine learning to provide detailed and configurable detection, data insights and local signal control. Integrating the system with traffic signals should improve road safety and reduce disruption.

In Bath, the cloud-hosted Stratos UTMC will help the council deliver integrated, network-wide traffic management and control. Replacing an existing system, Stratos should deliver operational benefits and enhance efficiency, connectivity and data insight across the region’s traffic network.

Yunex has completed the installation of its Yutraffic AwareAI video analytics in Coventry, transforming how traffic is managed at complex traffic signal intersections. It uses AI-trained machine learning to deliver detailed detection, classification and data insight capabilities.

The Coventry site presented a unique set of challenges, with multiple residential driveways within the interior of the intersection not being visible to the signal’s installed detection methods. Conventional options, such as induction loops, would not only have been costly and disruptive, but would also not have been able to deal adequately with cars from a nearby industrial estate, which are frequently parked near the properties.

Yutraffic AwareAI detects vehicles exiting the driveways and triggering an all-red signal phase, improving safety and reducing disruption for other road users on this busy route.

In Bath, the council selected Stratos for its ability to deliver immediate performance gains and enhanced control of day-to-day traffic management operations.

The cloud-hosted Stratos platform provides a modern, intuitive environment that improves how the traffic team manages the network. Benefits include simpler and more flexible VMS legend setting, particularly for RGB signs, and a user-friendly strategy manager capability that supports logic and conflict checking. Integrated count data functionality enables pedestrian crossing sites to be automatically placed under control, while also allowing the council to set clear UTC and UTMC command priority levels.

Stratos enhances connectivity across the network through remote handsets, browser-based access and remote firmware updates and upgrades.
