The smart highways market was $36.3bn in 2025 and is expected to reach $80.3bn by 2033, at a CAGR of 18%, according to DataM Intelligence.

The market is rapidly evolving from conventional road infrastructure into an intelligent transportation ecosystem. Governments, transportation authorities, infrastructure developers, technology providers and automotive stakeholders are accelerating investments in smart highways, driven by urbanisation, traffic congestion, road safety requirements and digital transformation initiatives.

The integration of intelligent traffic management systems, connected infrastructure, IoT-enabled sensors, surveillance and real-time data analytics is transforming highways into safer, more efficient, and connected transportation networks.

Key players include ABB, ALE, AT&T, Cisco, IBM, Huawei, LG CSN, Honeywell, Schneider Electric and Siemens.

Smart highways market opportunities start with accelerating connected infrastructure by integrating IoT sensors, V2X communication and real-time traffic data to enable intelligent, connected road networks. Players are deploying smart road infrastructure, vehicle-to-infrastructure communication and AI-powered traffic systems to support autonomous and connected vehicles.

They are expanding AI-based incident detection, predictive maintenance, smart lighting and automated traffic management to reduce accidents and improve highway safety.

North America at 34.3% has the largest share, driven by early adoption of smart transportation systems, electronic tolling, extensive highway infrastructure and government funding for highway modernisation.

Europe has a 27.6% share and is seeing strong growth supported by intelligent transport initiatives, digital road infrastructure investment, smart tolling and widespread V2X deployment.

The Asia Pacific region is third at 25.8% share but is displaying the fastest-growth fuelled by rapid urbanisation, highway expansion, smart-city programmes, and investments in China, India, Japan and South Korea.

The Middle East and Africa has a 7.0% share but is growing through smart-city programmes, national infrastructure visions and traffic-management investments, particularly in Saudi Arabia and the UAE. South America has a 5.3% share but is expanding through electronic tolling, surveillance systems and public-private investment to modernise major transportation corridors.

Software is being used for smart highway management and analytics, along with hardware such as sensors, cameras, communication devices and roadside infrastructure, and services including installation, maintenance, consulting and system integration.

Cloud-based technologies enable scalable, remotely accessible highway management, and on-premises options provide localised infrastructure control and data management.

Intelligent transportation management systems cover traffic management, communications, monitoring and other technologies such as electronic toll collection, connected infrastructure and smart lighting.
