Swiss airport technology group Sita has introduced a mobile wifi system to keep airport operations flexible and secure.

In an industry where connectivity failures can quickly disrupt passengers and delay operations, the mobile wifi service can help airports, airlines and ground handlers stay connected and keep things moving.

With the launch of Sita Mobile Wifi, or Mifi, air transport stakeholders can access fast, flexible and secure wireless connectivity wherever it’s needed, whether on the tarmac, in cargo areas, at pop-up checkpoints or during emergencies.

Mifi provides a fully managed, cost-effective service that bundles routers, MDA SIMs, eSIMs, satellite communications and secure service edge (SSE) technologies to deliver seamless wireless roaming and dependable connectivity. It is designed to address common operational pain points, such as limited bandwidth, gaps in coverage, lack of system redundancy and the long delays often involved in deploying fixed systems.

“Our customers face real challenges when it comes to connectivity,” said Martin Smillie, senior vice president at Sita. “System outages, bandwidth limits or lack of redundant capacity can lead to major disruptions, penalties and revenue loss. With Sita Mifi, we’re providing a fast, adaptable, one-stop option that helps customers maximise busy periods and minimise costly downtime. It gives them the operational backup they need to keep things running smoothly, no matter where they are.”

Beyond improving resilience, Mifi reduces costs by cutting administrative overhead, avoiding unnecessary engineering fees and strengthening cyber security. Rapid deployment lets users quickly extend reliable global connectivity to new or hard-to-reach locations without long delays or complex setups.

Features include:

  • SIM or eSIM compatibility in selected models, offering flexible connectivity
  • 4G and 5G support, using the latest mobile network technology for high speeds and capacity
  • Low-Earth-orbit (LEO) satellite and broadband coverage, reaching even the most remote locations
  • Built-in battery systems in selected models for portability and convenience
  • Enhanced security with SSE, firewalls, VPN, intrusion detection and encryption to protect sensitive data
  • Round-the-clock managed support, giving users peace of mind with expert assistance always on hand

Mifi is part of Sita’s broader mission to help the air transport industry build more resilient, agile and secure digital operations. All this helps make sure flights move on time, passengers stay connected and airport operations remain efficient worldwide.

Sita (www.sita.aero), or Société Internationale de Télécommunications Aéronautiques, was founded in 1949 by eleven airlines to bring about shared infrastructure cost efficiency by combining their communications networks.
