The public transport ITS market in Europe and North America will reach €4.9bn by 2030, according to market watcher Berg Insight.
The estimated market value for ITS deployed in public transport operations in Europe was €2.6bn in 2025. With a CAGR of 5.3 per cent, this number is expected to reach €3.3bn by 2030. The North American market for public transport ITS is similarly forecasted to see aa CAGR of 5.0 per cent from €1.2bn in 2025 to €1.6bn in 2030.
Berg believes the market for ITS in public transport is in a growth phase, which will continue throughout the forecast period. Considerable investment is going towards electrification of the public transport fleet, which will require more sophisticated ITS to ensure reliable operation. In addition, the increasing demands from travellers for convenience and accessible real-time information contribute to a positive market situation. Advanced ITS and ticketing are core tools in tackling the problems facing the public transport industry in the coming years.
Some international aftermarket providers have emerged as leaders for public transport ITS. Major providers across Europe and North America include Trapeze Group, based in Canada, and Init in Germany. Both have significant installed bases in the two regions. Trapeze is part of Modaxo Group and recently announced a rebrand and separation of its European businesses to Ebblo, Grampian, Naviquate and Nexfeld.
Clever Devices and Conduent are also major actors on the North American public transport ITS market. The former has expanded into Europe with an acquisition and the latter is an international provider of fare collection systems. Additional companies with notable market shares in North America include Cubic Transportation, Avail Technologies and the Modaxo brand Vontas.
Examples of major vendors on national markets in Europe include Equams and RATP Smart Systems, which hold leading positions in France. IVU is an important player primarily in the Dach markets. Vix Technology, Flowbird and Ticketer are major providers in the UK. Other significant players include the Spanish groups GMV, Indra and Grupo Etra; French Thales; Atron in Germany; Scandinavian Fara and Consat Telematics; and Austria-based Swarco and Kontron Transportation. Several major OEMs also offer connected products to support the management of public transport fleets, with examples including Daimler Truck, Iveco, NFI, Traton and Volvo.
“Cyber security has been an important topic in the last years in both European and North America,” said Caspar Jansson, senior analyst at Berg Insight. “This has resulted in new guidelines, standards and regulations being introduced to protect vital services.”
Modern public transport relies heavily on connected technology to function and, with many interfaces to link systems, vulnerabilities can easily arise.
“Examples where vulnerabilities among tested public transport assets have enabled remote access to core systems have already been made public,” said Jansson. “This could enable malicious actors to jeopardise the safe operation of public transport networks. Interconnected systems require robust cyber security to safeguard the operation of multimodal public transport ITS.”
