Kapsch delivers C-ITS project on New Delhi highway

Austrian firm Kapsch TrafficCom is bringing connected mobility to Indian road users by delivering the country’s first cooperative intelligent transport systems (C-ITS) project on a highway near New Delhi.

Implemented with local firm Superwave Communication & Infrasolution (Scail), the project will demonstrate how real-time connectivity and AI-powered situational awareness can improve road safety and traffic efficiency on one of India’s key highway corridors.

Delivery of the project is starting immediately, with completion targeted over the next six months.

The pilot was designed from the ground up around road user protection, with a focus on high‑risk and dynamic situations such as temporary work zones. Through C-ITS services, drivers will receive timely, direct warnings about roadworks, maintenance vehicles, hazardous locations, traffic queues and temporary virtual signage directly into their vehicles, allowing them to anticipate situations well in advance and adapt their driving accordingly.

To enhance on-road awareness, selected locations along the corridor will be equipped with AI‑enabled video sensors. The system analyses traffic conditions in real time and detects safety-critical events, such as stopped vehicles, emerging congestion or the presence of road workers, enabling proactive traffic management and faster operator response.

All connected services will also be accessible via the Kapsch TrafficAssist mobile app, ensuring safety information reaches drivers directly, even beyond vehicles with built‑in connected systems. For road users, this means fewer surprises, better information, and a safer overall journey.

By launching its first C-ITS project, India hopes to position itself at the forefront of connected mobility. Drawing on experience from large-scale deployments across Europe, Australia and North America, Kapsch TrafficCom is adapting proven connected vehicle use cases to the conditions of Indian traffic, demonstrating that safety technology can be both scalable and locally relevant.
