Hitachi Rail is acquiring Clever Devices, a US-based provider of intelligent transportation systems. The acquisition will strengthen Hitachi Rail’s presence in North America and expand its footprint into multimodal public mobility.
The acquisition will allow Hitachi Rail to offer enhanced solutions for digital transformation and energy management beyond railways. Clever Devices’ fleet management technology will be integrated with Hitachi Rail’s Operation Control Centres to enable real-time multimodal solutions. The transaction is subject to regulatory approvals and is expected to close later this year.
Clever Devices expects 2026 revenues to exceed $220 million. It employs approximately 600 people. The company serves 250 customers worldwide. This includes eight of the ten largest North American transit agencies. Its portfolio includes fleet monitoring and passenger information systems. The company’s solutions are deployed across bus and railway systems in the United States, Europe, and South America.
Giuseppe Marino, Group CEO of Hitachi Rail, said the investment is an important milestone in the strategy to accelerate the digital transformation of public mobility. He stated that combining Clever Devices’ expertise with Hitachi’s HMAX Mobility platform will allow the company to offer data-driven solutions that optimise transport infrastructure.
Hitachi Rail operates in more than 50 countries and has a turnover of more than €7 billion. The company recently opened a digital factory in Maryland and invested in a new Canadian headquarters. Clever Devices was founded in 1987 and is headquartered in Woodbury, New York.
