Hitachi Rail has signed four contracts with CH Karnchang to improve automatic fare collection (AFC) for the Bangkok MRT and Bangkok Expressway & Metro (BEM).
This project provides more payment options and enhances a seamless mobility experience to passengers. By digitalising payments with open-loop EMV and integrating QR-code ticketing, Hitachi says it is placing Bangkok at the heart of sustainable and connected mobility.
Hitachi has been a technology partner for BEM (investor.bemplc.co.th) since the deployment of the first AFC system on the MRT Blue Line in 2004. This latest AFC upgrade for open loop EMV payment not only solidifies this partnership but also contributes to the digitalisation and integration of payment systems, ensuring sustainable mobility that is accessible to all.
“The contracts demonstrate our commitment to delivering the most advanced services locally in Thailand,” said Jean-Marc Reynaud, vice president of Hitachi Rail. “This paves the way for full interoperability and offering of social benefits to all passengers in Bangkok. We are honoured by the continued trust that BEM places in Hitachi Rail and welcome the alignment of our respective vision to deliver seamless and cost-efficient transport for the public.”
CH Karnchang (www.ch-karnchang.co.th) was founded in 1972. It undertakes construction projects from government agencies, state enterprises and private sectors, and operates in Thailand and Laos.
• Hitachi Rail (www.hitachirail.com) and SBS Transit have signed an MoU for a partnership that could shape the future of mobility in Singapore. The aim is to explore the opportunities in mobility innovations related to automatic fare collection and operations.
The Hitachi digital competence centre in Singapore will support the development of technologies for the innovation projects.
SBS Transit (www.sbstransit.com.sg) is Singapore’s leading transport operator. The agreement focuses on developing mobility innovations, fostering local talent development and driving innovation in the transport industry.
This partnership reflects a shared commitment to improving mobility, enhancing passenger experience and exploring opportunities for sustainable growth. Initiatives include applying AI algorithms to provide insights to transport authorities and operators on passenger experience, operations efficiency and revenue protection.
“This memorandum of understanding marks an important step in our journey to transform mobility through the power of data and artificial intelligence,” said Reynaud. “By combining Hitachi’s digital expertise with the operational insight of our partner, we aim to co-create innovations that improve operational efficiency and passenger experience. We are proud to collaborate on shaping the future of transport through smart and data-driven innovation.”
