IoT connectivity provider Soracom has introduced a cloud-based gateway that routes cellular voice calls from industrial and infrastructure devices directly to contact centres and VoIP providers. Potential applications include use by operators at remote industrial sites, precision farming, and mining operations, and could include reporting, support and safety calls.

The Soracom Air RTC Gateway employs standard Voice over LTE (VoLTE) to transmit audio from equipment such as parking terminals, elevator emergency buttons, and connected vehicles. The system routes calls based on the device’s SIM identity, eliminating the need for per-device phone number management or specialised voice software on the hardware.

Voice data travels securely from the device to Soracom’s cloud infrastructure, where it is converted to VoIP and directed to external providers or private enterprise networks. The system can also route initial calls to automated software systems for triage before connecting to a human operator.

Kenta Yasukawa, chief technology officer at Soracom, said the gateway turns a device’s built-in cellular voice into a managed connection routed by SIM identity without requiring additional voice applications on the device.
