Finnish telecommunications equipment maker Nokia has launched a field-deployable edge computing and communications platform designed to maintain operational resilience for mining, construction and remote industrial sites.

The Cognitive Operations system integrates mission-critical communications with edge computing to provide continuous connectivity in harsh environments. By creating a dynamic hybrid wireless network with no single point of failure, the platform ensures that remote industrial operations remain online even when traditional network access is compromised.

For the mining sector, the platform uses a hardware unit called the Cognitive Edge Node to deliver resilient communications across extraction sites. The system provides operational teams with real-time site intelligence, live 3D digital twins, predictive maintenance data and autonomous safety monitoring to reduce equipment downtime.

In field operations and emergency services, the platform converts response vehicles into autonomous communication nodes. Vehicles can self-organise into a distributed network at an incident scene, processing video analytics locally and maintaining communications across 5G, Wi-Fi and satellite connections.

The system integrates wireless networking technology from Rajant Corporation and supports deployment through local IT infrastructure or the Microsoft Azure cloud.

“Our Cognitive Operations solution extends AI directly into the field, enabling real-time intelligence where physical operations happen,” said Lelio Di Martino, General Manager of Cognitive Operations for Nokia.
