Japan’s Mitsubishi Electric Corporation has developed an artificial intelligence (AI) system that can accurately predict equipment degradation with minimal training data.
The technology, which is part of the company’s Maisart AI program, combines physics-based models with machine learning to estimate the performance and lifespan of industrial equipment. This approach requires less data than traditional methods, which typically rely on mathematical models or simulations to detect degradation.
According to industry experts, Japan’s manufacturing sector faces a shortage of experienced maintenance technicians due to an ageing population. As a result, there is a growing need for predictive maintenance solutions that can identify potential issues before they cause equipment failure or defective products.
The new AI system uses operational data from industrial equipment to learn and adapt to different operating conditions, making it easier to deploy in various environments without requiring extensive retraining. Mitsubishi Electric’s technology aims to help manufacturers optimise their assets and reduce maintenance costs while maintaining productivity and quality.
