Japanese electronics company TDK has developed a material that can increase the life of batteries in medical wearables.
This could give its CeraCharge solid-state batteries an energy density of 1000Wh/L, approximately 100 times greater than the energy density of TDK’s conventional solid-state battery.
The technology can be used in various wearable devices, such as wireless earphones, hearing aids and even smartwatches, with the goal of replacing existing coin cell batteries.
Using proprietary material technology, TDK has developed a material for the solid-state battery with a significantly higher energy density than its conventional mass-produced solid-state batteries due to the use of oxide-based solid electrolyte and lithium alloy anodes. The use of oxide-based solid electrolyte makes batteries extremely safe.
It is for use in wearable and other devices that come in direct contact with the human body.
The battery can replace coin cell primary batteries in compliance with EU battery regulations, which require them to be replaced by rechargeable batteries to contribute to the reduction of environmental impact.
TDK says it will strive to develop the battery cells and package structure design and advance towards mass production in a solid-state battery. Moreover, it aims to enhance the capacity of the batteries through multi-layer lamination technology and expand its operating temperature by applying the production engineering technology it has accumulated in its electronic components business.
• TDK (www.tdk.com) has announced a sensor partner programme to empower faster time-to-market and innovation using InvenSense MEMS sensors in IoT, wearable, hearable, AR, VR and robotics applications. Through these ecosystem partnerships, more engineers and developers can access InvenSense sensor technology along with the reference designs, software and development kits that help bring product designs to reality.
The InvenSense sensor partner programme (invensense.tdk.com/partner-showcase) enables ODMs, OEMs, developers, engineers and tech enthusiasts to work with a wide variety of InvenSense MEMS sensors such as motion sensors, industrial motion modules, microphones, pressure sensors and ultrasonic sensors. Partner reference kits serve as real-world examples of how InvenSense MEMS sensors work with products to create more accurate, reliable and efficient offerings across industries.
