China’s first AI medical school has been launched in Guangdong. The school, part of Guangdong Medical University, aims to prepare for an era of medicine transformed by AI.

The initiative will create open-source medical scenarios for the creation and training of domestic medical AI models. It will also support development of AI literacy among students as they progress from university to hospital. The University is particularly targeting AI literacy in medical knowledge learning, clinical research, diagnosis and treatment.

The AI Medical School model has been developed using a HarmonyOS-powered ecosystem medical intelligent computing centre. HarmonyOS is a Huawei developed multi-kernal OS that can embed alternate kernels including Linux, Android, and a Huawei-developed micro-kernel system.

The system employed by Guangdong Medical University integrates virtual and real environments, as well as software and hardware. The centre has employed AI, virtual reality, digital twin and metaverse technologies to create an AI medical education platform. This provides application scenarios for emerging medical AI models.

The school has introduced a series of medical AI large-scale models and data resources through collaborations with AI firms as ecosystem partners. The first batch includes more than 30 general, industry and scenario-specific AI models in the medical field. It also includes high-quality data resources, 100 well-known teachers and doctors, and over 20 ecosystem partners.
