Following a cybersecurity incident that resulted in a breach of its systems and caused a global disruption to its operations, Boston Scientific this week said the incident has been resolved and remote monitoring activations for cardiac device implant communicators and ICM remote monitoring can now resume.
“The network disruption did not impact implantable device function, the ability for programmer communication with implanted devices, nor monitoring capabilities for cardiac devices enrolled in remote monitoring prior to the disruption,’’ the company said in a newly-released statement.
In late August, the company disclosed that the unauthorized activity on some of its systems resulted in a network outage affecting access to certain operating systems and business applications, “which impacted the company’s ability to manufacture as well as process and ship customer orders.”
In a recent report to the Securities & Exchange Commission, Boston Scientific said that “the company has not identified evidence of ongoing unauthorized access to its systems,’’ and that “the company’s investigation of the incident remains ongoing.”

We continue to make strong progress in restoring our global operations. Our distribution network has been substantially restored, and our major distribution centers are now processing and shipping products at or above normal operating levels. Teams are working around the clock to fulfill customer orders, reduce backlogs and accelerate the delivery of products to customers and the patients who depend on them.
Progress also continues across our broader supply chain. All sterilization facilities are operational and processing products, and manufacturing has resumed across most facilities globally, with additional capabilities continuing to come online.
The company said that as it continues toward full recovery, its priorities are to:
- Fulfill customer orders, replenish sales representative inventory and reduce remaining backlogs
- Restore remaining manufacturing capabilities
- Maintain the reliable flow of products across our global supply chain
- Equip customers and healthcare providers with timely information and support
Boston Scientific manufacturers remote heart monitoring technologies. Its LATITUDE home monitoring system is a remote device that gives a patient’s doctor access to healthcare data from certain cardiac implants such as pacemakers and defibrillators between office visits.
