Artisight has developed a smart hospital platform to document operating room procedures in a patient’s electronic health record (EHR) using computer vision.

The platform can autonomously document operating room activity into a patient’s EHR using AI and computer vision. This eliminates the need for clinicians and other healthcare staff to document key milestones in an operating room procedure manually. It provides real-time updates to drive patient satisfaction and is a way to use high-demand resources more productively.

In the operating room, the platform can now autonomously detect and document patient entry and exit, procedure start and end time, and other key milestones in a patient procedure. Each action is recorded in real time within the EHR, providing a precise, timestamped account of events without manual input. It also autonomously prompts clinicians to complete the next steps in their workflow based on what is happening in the room. For example, when a patient enters the room, the surgeon is alerted to scrub in, or if an operation exceeds its expected duration, the next surgical team is notified, without human intervention or oversight.

On average, clinicians spend 3.5 to 6 hours per day (www.ama-assn.org/practice-management/digital-health/five-physician-specialties-spend-most-time-ehr) on data entry and documentation in the EHR. This can reduce the documentation burden on these healthcare providers, allowing them to focus more fully on care delivery rather than administrative tasks. Automated, real-time documentation ensures greater procedural accuracy, streamlines workflows and reduces time wasted on post-procedure data entry. These improvements have led to cost savings and more efficient operating room turnover, and streamlined communication with clinicians and care teams.

“This is a pivotal moment in the evolution of the smart hospital,” said Andrew Gostine, CEO of Utah-based Artisight. “We now bring awareness and sensory capabilities that directly complement and support clinicians and staff. In a smart hospital, clinicians are empowered to focus on patients and know that their time and the patient’s time is valued.”

Artisight’s operating room technology is already reporting a 16-times return on investment and a 5% increase in scheduling procedures. These advancements build upon the company’s mission to make hospital infrastructure smart for the first time. The platform brings awareness to patient rooms and the OR with AI-powered cameras and sensors, bidirectional audio and video streams, and ambient documentation technology to complement and extend the capacity of clinicians and staff.

Guided by deep clinical expertise and powered by Nvidia (www.nvidia.com) AI, Artisight’s voice-activated sensors and computer vision technology enable real-time observation, virtual nursing, and automated documentation directly in the EHR. The platform integrates seamlessly with existing workflows to reduce staff burden, accelerate patient throughput and improve safety. More than 400 hospitals across 30 health systems use Artisight (artisight.com) to deliver measurable results, including cutting patient falls by over 50%, reducing nurse turnover and saving millions annually.
